A CONCEPT NOTE

Back

With the above background in mind, The Andhra Pradesh English Lecturers Retraining Program, jointly sponsored by the Department of Collegiate Education, AP, and the US State Department, has been established with the goal of improving the communicative proficiency in English of undergraduate students of AP colleges by updating the teaching skills of English language lecturers. The program aims to accomplish this through two different types of workshops – one for 25 Lead teachers selected from all the zones through a district wise representation called English Language Trainers workshop. The second one is for twenty lecturers from each zone which will be called as English Language Teaching Skills Update workshops for lecturers from all seven zones of AP.

  1. The Trainers workshop will begin on 27th January 2006 at the Department of Collegiate Education in
  2. The other seven workshops will be of 10 days duration each. (60 hours).
  3. The program will also provide teachers’ handbooks, a training manual and an English Language Skills Kit for the English departments.

By addressing the immediate need of teachers and students for improved English language communication skills, the program also hopes to positively affect other areas of reform in materials design, curriculum, and testing. Ultimately, these improvements will lead to enhanced critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills: all skills essential not only for better students, but also for better businessmen and citizens.
